A Premium Desert Winter Experience
Winter transforms the desert into something rare and fleeting.
In both Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon National Park, snow softens the landscape, light lingers longer, and the crowds disappear—revealing a quieter, more refined version of two of the most iconic landscapes in the American West.
This workshop is built around that transformation.

The Experience
This is not a checklist tour of iconic locations.
This is a carefully crafted photographic experience designed to place you in the right conditions—at the right time—so you can create work that feels intentional, atmospheric, and unique.
Winter offers something few photographers ever experience:
- Snow-draped hoodoos glowing at sunrise
- Quiet canyon scenes with fresh, undisturbed compositions
- Storm light, fog, and rapidly changing conditions that elevate ordinary scenes into extraordinary images
With fewer crowds and softer light, you’ll have the space and time to slow down, refine compositions, and work scenes deeply.
What Makes This Experience Different
Solitude & Access
Winter changes everything.
The busy trails and crowded viewpoints of Zion and Bryce give way to:
- Open compositions
- Quiet working environments
- The ability to explore and refine without pressure
This alone fundamentally changes the quality of your photography.
Light That Works for You
Winter light is lower, softer, and more directional.
That means:
- Longer shooting windows at sunrise and sunset
- Better contrast control in high-dynamic scenes
- More opportunity to work with subtle tones and atmosphere
You’re no longer chasing light—you’re working with it.
Two Landscapes, Two Creative Approaches
Bryce Canyon is about:
- Pattern, repetition, and abstraction
- Telephoto compositions through hoodoo forests
- Graphic interplay of snow and sandstone
Zion National Park is about:
- Depth, scale, and layered canyon compositions
- Reflected light and subtle tonal transitions
- River scenes, trees, and quiet atmospheric moments
Together, they create a complete and diverse portfolio experience.
LODGING & TRANSPORTATION
A block of rooms will be available for participants in both Bryce Canyon and Springdale, Utah. A booking code and reservation details will be provided approximately three months prior to the start of the workshop.
For travel, the closest major airport to Bryce Canyon is Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC), located approximately 4 hours from the park. From there, a standard rental car is recommended for the scenic drive to Bryce and throughout the workshop.
Physical Requirements
This workshop involves moderate physical activity, including short hikes on rocky and uneven terrain, walking in snow or icy conditions, and wading through cold water during our guided Narrows hike. Participants should be in good health, comfortable carrying their camera gear on hikes of up to 1 mile, and prepared for winter weather. Proper footwear and layered clothing are essential for staying warm and safe in variable conditions.

The Difference

It’s not about seeing more.

Workshop Schedule
Day 1 – Arrival & Orientation (Bryce Canyon)
We’ll begin the workshop at 3:00 PM in Bryce Canyon with a group orientation followed by a sunset shoot to get things started.
Day 2 – Full Day in Bryce Canyon
We'll spend the entire day exploring and photographing Bryce's snow-covered hoodoos, rim overlooks, and intimate scenes in the amphitheater. Sunrise, midday abstracts, and sunset opportunities are all part of the plan.
Day 3 – Sunrise & Travel to Zion
After a final sunrise shoot in Bryce, we’ll make our way to Springdale, Utah, just outside Zion National Park. In the afternoon we will head out to explore and photograph Zion until after sunset.
Day 4 – Full Day in Zion Canyon
We’ll photograph throughout Zion Canyon and surrounding areas, seeking out dramatic light, winter textures, waterfalls, and small scenes. Locations will vary depending on weather and conditions.
Day 5 – Final Sunrise & Departure
We’ll wrap up the workshop with one last sunrise shoot in Zion. The workshop concludes by 10:00 AM, allowing time to pack up and begin your journey home.
