Step into a landscape that feels more like another planet than Earth.

Remote badlands in the wilds of Utah's San Rafeal Swell.

In the remote desert landscapes surrounding Hanksville, Utah, the earth reveals itself in ways that can only truly be seen from above. This small-group drone photography workshop is designed to immerse you in one of the most visually striking regions of the American Southwest—where sculpted badlands, winding washes, and otherworldly formations create an endless canvas of form, texture, and light. Together, we’ll explore iconic locations such as Factory Butte, the Moonscape Overlook, and the edges of Capitol Reef, focusing on the art of aerial composition, visual simplification, and crafting compelling, portfolio-worthy imagery from a unique perspective.

Working in a small, focused group, we will venture into iconic locations including Factory Butte, the Moonscape Overlook, and the outer reaches of Capitol Reef. Each day is built around the best light, with sunrise and sunset field sessions that allow you to fully engage with the landscape as it reveals its depth and dimension. Between sessions, we’ll dive into image review and post-processing, refining your work and developing a deeper understanding of how to translate what you see from the air into strong, intentional photographs.

Aerial Vision & Creative Development

This workshop goes far beyond simply flying a drone. It is an in-depth exploration of how to see—how to recognize compelling patterns, isolate meaningful compositions, and use light, shadow, and scale to create images that feel both dynamic and refined. You’ll learn how to simplify complex scenes, build visual flow within the frame, and move from descriptive imagery toward a more expressive, fine art approach.

We’ll cover essential techniques for aerial photography, including flight positioning, altitude control, lens selection, and compositional strategy. Just as importantly, we’ll focus on developing your personal vision—helping you move with intention in the field and come away with a cohesive body of work rather than a collection of disconnected images.

Small Group, Personalized Instruction

To ensure a highly personalized and immersive experience, this workshop is limited to a small group of participants. This allows for one-on-one guidance in the field, detailed feedback during editing sessions, and the flexibility to adapt to changing light and conditions. Whether you are refining your aerial photography skills or looking to push your creative boundaries, you’ll receive the attention and direction needed to elevate your work.

Immersion in the Desert

One of the most powerful aspects of this workshop is the setting itself. We will be working in remote, quiet locations far from crowds and distractions—places where the landscape can be experienced fully and without interruption. Evenings often end under expansive desert skies, with time to reflect, review images, and connect with others who share a passion for photography and exploration.

This is more than a workshop—it’s an opportunity to step into a unique environment, slow down, and engage deeply with both the landscape and your creative process.

Mineral layers fold and flow like fabric, each band recording a chapter in the planet’s long and patient story.
A lone formation rises from a sea of eroded waves, catching the first breath of sunrise — a sentinel standing watch over deep time.
At sunset the desert becomes a living map — every ridge, basin, and channel pulsing with the slow heartbeat of the planet.
