Death Valley, a landscape of extremes. From the highest point in the lower 48 states, Mount Whitney to the lowest, driest and hottest place in North America, Badwater Basin, this workshop will visit some of California’s most spectacular scenery from massive sand dunes, alien like playa's, granite arches, multi-colored badlands and rugged mountain ranges reaching towards the heavens.

6 days of intensive photography instruction in the field and classroom, image lectures. image critiques, post processing training in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.

Does Not Include

Airfare, transportation, lodging & meals. We have secured a discounted room rate at a hotel in Canaan Valley for participants (this is also where we will be conducting classroom sessions). Car pool ride sharing is encouraged for traveling to shooting locations.


Joseph will focus on learning to “see” the landscape in new ways; unlocking creativity in situations that require conceptual and compositional ingenuity. In addition to composition and creative vision, they will discuss the best use of light and subject matter to create a memorable and remarkable images. During classroom sessions we will focus on creative and technical skills to help unlock vision & creativity. Image critiques will allow you to get feedback on your work throughout the week ensuring that you hone your skills and continue to push your personal and creative boundaries. Classroom editing sessions will cover Joe’s unique and creative approach to image development.


Day one: Meet at 2pm at Stovepipe Wells for meet and greet and introduction. Followed by a late afternoon/sunset shoot.

Day two: Sunrise/morning shoot in Death Valley. Afternoon break. Afternoon/sunset shoot.

Day three: Sunrise/morning shoot in Death Valley. Afternoon processing session. Afternoon/sunset shoot.

Day four: Sunrise/morning shoot in Death Valley. In the afternoon we will be commuting to Lone pine. Afternoon/sunset shoot in the Alabama Hills.

Day five: Sunrise/morning shoot in the Alabama Hills. Afternoon processing classroom & critiques. Afternoon/sunset trip to photograph an amazing Joshua Tree forest on the edge of Death Valley.

Day six: Sunrise/morning shoot in the Alabama Hills. Closing breakfast. Workshop ends at 10am.


There will be no strenuous hiking involved during the Death Valley Landscape Photography Workshop and most locations will be close to the road. Some locations, however may involve a short hike of 1 mile with no serious elevation gains. We will be spending a lot of time outdoors shooting in winter conditions. Daytime temperatures in the desert during winter can vary quite widely. It’s imperative that participants be prepared for outdoor winter recreation, lots of warm layers, hats, mittens, good outerwear and warm boots are a must. A modest level of health and fitness will greatly enhance your experience.


The nearest airport is Las Vegas International Airport. The drive from Las Vegas Airport to Furnace Creek, CA is approximately 2.5 hours

Any standard rental will suffice for this workshop as we will be traveling paved park roads and some well maintained park gravel roads. We will establish a carpool at the beginning of the workshop.
