Zion & Bryce Canyon Winter Photography Workshop - January 29 - February 2, 2023

Stunning southwest landscapes under magical winter conditions!

Dates: January 29 - February 2nd, 2023
Tuition: $2,495.00
Location: Zion National Park & Bryce Canyon National Park
Instructor: Joseph Rossbach

Winter in Canyon Country is magical! Red rock landscapes, towering hoodoos and deep canyons cover in a blanket of snow create stunning and otherworldly opportunities for amazing landscape images. Over this workshop we will be shooting in both Zion & Bryce Canyon National Parks and their surrounding areas. Mid winter is the best bet for capturing the desert dressed in her winter finest, but like all natural landscapes the weather can be unpredictable from year to year, so we will be bouncing around between both parks chasing the very best winter landscapes we can find. Each day we will shoot from sunrise till sunset with a 2 hour break in the middle of the day. We will grab meals in between shooting locations.

Day 1: Meet and greet starting at 1pm at hotel in Springdale, Utah (just outside of Zion National Park) followed by an afternoon/sunset shoot in the park.

Day 2-5: Each day we will be out from pre-sunrise till after sunset chasing the best weather and light. Often times in Canyon Country some of the best photography happens during the middle of the day as the deep canyons come to life with reflected light.

This workshop requires us to be extremely flexible and for that reason we will not be reserving lodging prior to the workshop (except for the first night in Zion). This will allow us to chase the best conditions between the two park and their surrounding areas each day. Lodging is not a concern at this time of the year. There are ample hotels and motels near all shooting locations and we will arrange lodging each day based on where we shoot.

On our last day we will have a post processing session after our sunrise shoot that will last approximately 2-3 hours. Workshop concludes around 11am on the 2nd.

Workshop Requirements:

  • Open to all photography levels
  • Must be able to hike easy to moderate trails and go up and down steep sandstone hills. Plan on hiking/walking anywhere from 2-4 miles per day.
  • Open to working in challenging and cold conditions.
  • An appetite for adventure and discovery.
  • Open to a loose schedule that allows maximum flexibly in order to get the best possible landscape images.

Planning your trip:

If you are flying into the workshop, the closest major airport is Las Vegas International Airport (2.5 hours from Zion). A 4x4 or all wheel drive vehicle is highly recommended for traveling winter roads and sometimes dirt roads to locations. When planning your return flight, keep in mind we may finish the workshop in Zion or in Bryce. Bryce is approximately a 4 hour drive back to Las Vegas. For this reason it is recommended to book evening flights on the 2nd or a flight on the 3rd.

A detailed equipment/clothing/gear list will be sent out 60 days prior to the workshop in order for participants to purchase any gear or clothing they may need for the workshop.

The workshop fee is for instruction only. All other expenses, including transportation, accommodations, National Park entrance fees, and meals are the responsibility of the participant. A non-refundable deposit of $500 is required to secure your spot on this workshop. The remainder will be collected 90 days prior to the workshop start.

If you cancel within 90 days before the start date, a partial or full refund of the workshop tuition might be available as long as we are able to find a replacement. We try to be flexible about emergency cancellations; just contact us and we’ll do our best to work it out!
