Cost: 1695.00 (300.00 non refundable deposit due at registration)
Group size: 6

This striking South Dakota landscape boasts a maze of buttes, canyons, pinnacles and spires perfect for dramatic landscape photography. The badlands are one of the hardest places to master compelling compositions, but all the ingredients are present for the perfect landscape imagery. Over the course of this 5 day small group workshop, we will explore the best locations in the park and dig deep into advanced photography composition, use of natural light and digital post processing.

The skills you will learn here will allow you to make incredible landscape photos no matter where you go.

Join me in beautiful Badlands National Park!

Workshop location: The workshop is based in Wall, South Dakota (just outside Badlands National Park), where we will conduct all classroom activities. We'll make several daily trips into the National Park for photography.

Physical requirements: Since we will get a bit off the beaten path, we will be doing hiking during this workshop. Although we won't go more than three to four miles on any given day (and usually it will be much less), the terrain in the Badlands can be uneven, and we will have some short but steep climbs. People in decent physical condition will find the hiking to be easy to moderate. People who are in poor shape or who have mobility issues will find this workshop very difficult.

Lodging: Lodging is not included in the workshop price. There are plenty of lodging options in Wall. As Wall is an extremely small town and all of the hotels are within a block or two of each other, feel free to chose lodging that best fits your needs and budget.

Transportation: Participants are responsible for their own transportation to, from, and during the workshop. The closest major airport to Wall is Rapid City Regional Airport (RAP) which is 55 miles away. Sioux Falls Regional Airport (FSD) is another option, just over four hours away.

Payment policy: The workshop fee is for instruction only. All other expenses, including transportation, accommodations, National Park entrance fees, and meals are the responsibility of the participant. A non-refundable deposit of $300 is required to secure your spot on this workshop. The remainder will be collected 60 days prior to the workshop start.

Workshop Itinerary Please note that each day’s schedule might vary according to which locations we visit that day, how long we shoot, and what the weather conditions are like (if the weather is conducive to photography on a particular day, we might stay in the field longer, and if not, we might emphasize classroom work that day instead). Flexibility is key to successful landscape photography, so expect that plans might change.

Day 1: Meet & Greet starting at 3pm followed by an instructional slide show on locations & techniques used for the best photography in the park. We will also be answering any general questions and getting everyone up to speed for a week of amazing photography followed by a sunset photo session in the park.

Day 2-4: Sunrise/morning photo shoot. Afternoon class session. Afternoon/sunset photo shoot. Each day we will spend at least 2-3 hours (possibly longer if the conditions are right) on each morning and afternoon session. During the day there will time for meals and breaks as well as several hours of photo instruction on topics from advanced composition, use of light, special techniques and image editing.

Day 5: Sunrise morning shoot. Workshop ends no later than 9am.

If you cancel within 60 days before the start date, a partial or full refund of the workshop tuition might be available as long as we are able to find a replacement. We try to be flexible about emergency cancellations; just contact us and we’ll do our best to work it out!
