Description:
Join award winning photographers Mark LaRowe and Joseph Rossbach for a an amazing foray through the little known badlands of eastern Montana. Commonly known as “The Big Sky State”, Montana is mostly recognized for its 64 named mountain ranges which reside primarily in the western half of the state. However, to the East of the Rocky Mountain Front resides a dizzying array of cap rocks and eroded sediments and rock. One of the most under-appreciated set of hoodoos in the country lies in the spectacular Makoshika State Park south of Glendive. Slightly to the northwest of Glendive is the relatively unknown Terry Badlands Wilderness Study Area. The Terry Badlands is reminiscent of the well-known Badlands National Park in South Dakota. Its features includes colorful, banded cliffs that overlook the beautiful rolling prairie.
Exploration will reveal a variety of sandstone formations including mesas, and buttes riven by deep gullies. To the east of Glendive, via a 1-hour drive, lies famed Theodore Rosevelt National Park, named after the 26th president of the Untied States. Theodore Rosevelt National Park, one of the least visited US National Parks, offers amazing opportunities to photograph the rolling prairie, mixed badlands, interesting erosional features and variety of wildlife including the American Bison, Prairie Dogs, deer and possibly more wildlife.
In June, the prairie is layered in colorful array of wildflowers. In addition, we will explore historic abandoned homestead and town ruins on the prairie. Large thunderstorms are possible and create incredible drama and backdrop for the prairie photographs.
