Overview:  West Virginia's Allegheny Plateau Receives Some Of The Heaviest Snowfall Totals In All Of The Appalachian Mountains And With Roads That Access Waterfalls, Canyon Overlooks, Streams And Rivers And Scenic Vistas It Makes This Location A Prime Spot For Winter Landscape Photography. 

This Workshop Will Be Based Out Of Blackwater Falls State Park Lodge Where We Will Have Direct Access To Waterfalls, Scenic Overlooks And Pristine Forests. During The Course Of This Weekend Workshop We Will Also Spend An Ample Amount Of Time In Classroom At The Lodge Discussing Photographic Techniques, Creativity, Compassion And Post Processing.

Physical Difficulty: Moderate To Difficult. This Workshop Does Involve Some Difficult Conditions And Ice Grips Or Crampons Are Highly Recommended.  Even Short Hikes To Streams And Waterfalls Can Involve Slippery, Uneven Terrain..   

Transportation:  Driving Conditions Will Consist Of Paved Roads. When Possible We Prefer That Participants Car Pool With Each Other To Help Limit Our Impact And Get To Know Each Other.

 We Will Teach A Variety Of Techniques—Both In The Field And During Our Informal Classroom Sessions—That Will Allow You To Advance Both Your Technical Skills And Artistic Vision. We Focus On A Number Of Professional Field Techniques To Help You Create Dramatic And Powerful Nature Images, Including:

• Working With Dramatic Light, Including Sunrise And Sunset
• Using Less-Than-Dramatic Light To Your Advantage
• The Fundamentals Of Powerful Composition
• Abstract Techniques For Creating Artistic Photographs

We’ll Also Teach You A Number Of Professional “Digital Darkroom” Secrets As Well. Our Hands-On Informal Classroom Sessions - Held During The Middle Of The Day When The Light Is Not Conducive To Successful Photography - Will Teach You The Fundamentals Of Image Processing, And Allow You To Master Important Techniques Including:

• Working With Adjustment Layers
• Layer Masking And Image Blending Techniques
• Making Difficult Selections
• Color Management
• Special Effects Techniques Used For Artistic Expression
• Exporting, Sharpening, And Saving Images For Optimum Web Presentation

Itinerary:  The Workshop Will Begin At 12noon On Friday Feb. 6 Starting With An Opening Presentation Covering Many Aspects Of Nature And Landscape Photography Pertaining Specifically To Shooting Winter Images Including Ice &Snow, Frozen Waterfalls, Winter Forests, Abstracts And Ice Macro's. After A 2 Hour Presentation, We Will Spend The Rest Of The Day, Until Sunset, Shooting Several Locations In The Park. 

On Saturday, Feb. 7., We Will Meet One Hour Before Sunrise For A 3 Hour Field Session Followed By Breakfast At The Lodge And A Couple Hours Of Classroom Work Focusing On Post Processing Techniques In Adobe Lightroom And Photoshop. After Class, We Will Be Back In The Field Until After Sunset.

On Sunday, Feb 8th., We Will Have A 3 Hour Sunrise/Morning Shoot Followed By A Classroom Critique Session At The Lodge. The Workshop Will End At Noon Giving Folks Ample Time To For Commutes Or Rest If Staying An Extra Night
