The Highlands are mostly rugged and uninhabitable, covering a large part of the interior of Iceland. The area that we will explore was carved over a long period of time by volcanic activity and can largely be crossed only during the Icelandic summer.
It is a raw and powerful place, where deserts of black sand, steaming hot springs and barren glacial moraine are interspersed with lush fields of vegetation. The Highlands truly are a paradise. We will be camping over this workshop to ensure that we are in the most rugged and remote locations when the light is at it’s best.
The Highlands of Iceland are vast and are a combination of glaciers, moraines, red – yellow and black deserts, geothermal areas & hot springs, lava, lakes, rivers and waterfalls. In the Complete Highlands of Iceland Photo Workshop, you will get the opportunity to photograph and visit areas which offer all of the mentioned landscape. It is simply a photographers dream.
The Highlands are usually referred to as the area of Iceland located above 400m sea level and is approximately 76% of lands surface area. It is often referred to by Icelanders as óbyggðir – or an uninhabited country.
Roads often open in late June, and the area closes off at the beginning of October if the autumn is mild. This opening gives enthusiastic photographers only a few months a year to travel and enjoy the many breathtaking locations this area offers.
Day 0: You arrive in Iceland and check into your hotel in Reykjavik. We meet at the centrally located hotel and go out for dinner in Reykjavik where we briefly go through the tour itinerary, safety and some practical things before we start our adventure in Iceland the next day.
Day1: We travel to the central part of the Icelandic highlands, where we explore the area around Landmannalaugar. After driving through barren nature, we approach Landmannalaugar’s colourful mountains which were formed by centuries of volcanic activity in the area, the picturesque natural landscape in this raw climate is simply breathtaking. Notable sights are Landmannalaugar, Ljótipollur and Hnausapollur but really the photography opportunities are endless.
Landmannalaugar is the pearl of the Icelandic Highlands and is only accessible with a 4WD vehicle. Landmannalaugar is a part of a larger Fjallabak Nature Reserve and the surrounding area is dotted with unbelievably beautiful hiking trails, both short and long. The mountains are literally split with gullies and gorges in multiple colours. Landmannalaugar is located at the dark edge of the rhyolite lava field Laugahraun, close to a few hot springs which create excellent bathing conditions in a natural brook. We can enjoy a relaxing bath in a natural thermal pool which was created when many hot and cold springs in the area combined. The naturally warm water pool here is quite unique and is an ideal bathing place all year around.
Day 2- 5: We will be exploring, camping, hiking and traveling through the interior highlands going wherever the light and weather are best for dramatic landscape photography.
Day 6: After sunrise, we pack camp and head back to Reykjavik arriving in the afternoon. The tour will conclude once we arrive in Reykjavik. Clients can plan to book a hotel for the evening or catch a flight home.
