Nature Photography Master Class (Online)

Each course includes six lessons. For each lesson, you will be given a series of pages to read and study from the book. Each lesson is allotted one week for completion and includes a shooting assignment. The student may post questions in the virtual classroom at any time during the week for the instructor to answer. Once the assignment is completed, the student will post their work for image critique. At the completion of the course, each student will receive a personalized Certificate of Completion.

White Oak Canyon Waterfalls One Day Workshop in Shenandoah National Park

Session 1: April 23, 2010

Join me for an exciting day of shooting the many waterfalls, cascades and forest scenic s in White Oak Canyon. Springtime in Shenandoah National Park is a wonderful time of the year with fresh green foliage and rushing waters. This One Day Shenandoah National Park photography workshop will hike the trail up White Oak Canyon from the bottom parking lot near Sperryville, VA. On the the way up we will have the chance to shoot many waterfalls and cascades as well as some of the bigger falls in the park. I will be leading the group to the best vantage points, make creative observations, check exposures and histograms as well as critique images as we shoot. We start in the morning and hike up and shoot for a few hours. We will break for lunch as a group and then head back to the trail in the afternoon for another hike and shoot until the light is gone. This workshop includes about 1.5 to 3 miles of hiking in all, rock scrambling and getting wet. It's an adventure and a ton of great photo ops to be had!

West Virginia Waterfalls One Day Photo Workshop

West Virginia is a mecca for nature and landscape photographers and in late spring the rugged mountains come to life in fresh green spring leaves and rushing waterfalls and cascades. This One Day workshop will explore the many waterfalls and mountain streams surrounding Canaan Valley and Blackwater Falls State Parks. We will meet before sunrise for a shoot over the rugged landscape of Blackwater canyon and then spend the rest of the day exploring the many streams and waterfalls in the area. The workshop finishes up with a sunset shoot at dramatic Bear Rocks on Dolly Sods. You will need a DSLR, wide angle lens, circular polarizer and sturdy tripod for this workshop. If you choose the optional Sunday extension, we will have another sunrise shoot that morning followed up by re-visiting some of the waterfalls from the day before and a sunset shoot from Lindy Point.
Transportation, meals and lodging are not included in the cost.
Activity Level: Moderate (low level of hiking but some scrambling over rocks and steep hillside to navigate)

New Born Fawns and Summer Scenics in Shenandoah National Park Weekend Workshop

Shenandoah National Park in June is a great place for wildlife and landscape photography. The new born fawns are just beginning to explore their new world in Big Meadows, wildflowers are blooming and the mountain valleys fill up with fog along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains at sunrise. We will have 3 days to explore and photograph in this gem of the National Park System along Skyline Drive.
The workshop start at noon on Friday and ends at noon on Sunday. Some of the areas in the park we will shoot include fawns in Big Meadows, Dark Hollow Falls, White Oak Canyon, Black Rock summit, vistas from Skyline Drive and macro flowers in the park.

The Dolly Sods and Bear Rocks Photo Adventure

The cost of this workshop covers camping fees, instruction and guiding. You provide the transportation to and from Dolly Sods, food and all gear for camping and hiking.

Join Joe for an exciting and adventurous 4 day and 3 night camping and hiking photo tour of the Dolly Sods Wilderness and the Bear Rocks Preserve in the Allegheny Mountains of west Virginia. The base camp for this workshop will be the Red Creek campground where we will share a 3 campsites right next to one another. Two tens will be able to be erected at each site. During the day we will be shooting at some of my favorite locations for stunning scenic photography as well as hiking out to rock overlooks, shooting flora and fauna on the many trails. Each day starts at well before sunrise with a drive and short hike to our sunrise location. in the afternoons, we hike the trails and shoot the waterfalls in Red Creek, Fisher Creek and much, much more. Every night, we will get together at a big fire and cook food, sip a strong drink and talk photography and adventure before retiring to our tents for a much needed sleep under the stars.
