Earth Day Hike in White Oak Canyon
23rd April 2010
I spent Earth Day yesterday on an 8 mile hike in White Oak Canyon, Shenandoah National Park, Virginia. I have worked this area extensively in the past and choose to focus on many of the small cascades and waterfalls in the canyon instead of going after the big drops. The weather was pleasant all day, but the water was freezing cold and I spent most of my time in it getting the best looks and angles for the images.

I shot this image in the fading light. The sun was close to setting and the canyon wall was catching some really warm light and bouncing it into these cascades. I got in the water to get the best angle on this image.

I also liked the vertical composition as well. I decreased my shutter speed on this one to record a little more clarity in the flowing water.

I shot this small waterfall in the upper section of the canyon a bit earlier in the afternoon. The light was dappled and I waited for it to be partially obscured by the passing clouds. The soft light added a nice touch of highlights to the foliage without being too bright to balance the rest of the scene.

I am always on the lookout for abstract designs. When I found this small band of cross bedding I knew I had to get the shot. This was a little tricky getting down to as I had to cross the stream and down climb a series of slick cascades to get the right perspective on the image. I got fairly soaking wet and almost fell hard a few times.

New Work from Saint Michaels Maryland
10th December 2009
I spent last weekend leading a photography workshop based out of St. Michael's, Maryland. This small town holds a tremendous amount of charm and photo ops. Beside the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum with its old bots, shacks and Hooper Strait Lighthouse, there is also the quaint main street and access to some old abandoned houses. We spent time shooting around the museum, city lights at night, a trip down to Tilghman Island and a morning shoot along the various marinas at Oxford.

I have been shooting in this area for many years now and the same old shots just don't do it for me anymore. I made a concerted effort on this trip to shoot fresh images and really explore my creative vision in some over photographed areas. Here are a few of my favorite images from the trip. Enjoy!

Crab pots on Tilghman Island. Nikon D300, 70-200, 5 exposue HDR in Photomatix, finishing touches in Photoshop CS4

Abandoned house near Tilghman Island photographed with a Lensbaby 3G, tonemapped with Photomatix HDR and finishing touches in Adobe CS4

Holiday lights on main street, St. Michael's, MD. Photographed with a Lensbaby 3G.

Decrepit house near Tilghman Island, MD. Photographed with a Lensbaby 3G. Single exposure, Lightroom and NIK Tonal Contrast filter for effect.

Graveyard at night, St. Michael's, MD. 2 minute exposure with a Lensbaby 3G.

Boat repair house reflections on Oxford Island, Maryland.

Oxford marina and fishing boats before dawn. 3 minute exposure at F8. Boats painted with a flashlight and strobed with a gel.

Window display along main street St. Michael's. Lensbaby 3G and 45 second exposure.

"Thunder Falls" appears in this months Digital Photo UK magazine
20th November 2009

My image "Thunder Falls" has been published in this months Digital Photo (UK) Magazine. I shot this image last April while on assignment leading a photography workshop in Great Falls National Park. In order to get this extreme perspective, I had to place the camera just inches away from the falls and power of the river. Believe me, this is not a place you want to fall in! If so, you would be dead in no time as the river runs fast and drops off many cliffs on its way down Mather Gorge.
