Light Surge, Jupiter Island, Florida
February 5th, 2013

Taking a break from posting wildlife images for a moment to share a favorite landscape I created last week while shooting in S. Florida. The night before the weather forecast looked very promising for Jupiter Island with storms of the coast at dawn and a rip tide warning for Coral Cove (that usually means big waves).
I packed up my camp at 3am and hit the road for the 1.5 hour drive to Jupiter arriving on the beach an hour before first light. This gave me plenty of time to study where the waves were breaking and be in position if and when the light broke, and it broke in a big way! I shot many images as the light reached it’s peak of drama and color hoping for just one with great wave action in the immediate foreground. I was lucky to get it considering I kept getting blasted with waves every 30 seconds or so.
Nikon D800, 14-24mm, Fotodiox Adapter & CPL, 1./4 second @ F14, ISO 50. (2 exposure blend: one for the sky and the second for the waves and rocks)

Thanks Mark!!!
My God, Joseph, I want to take pictures like you when I grow up!!
I’m new at digital photography, but I’m fascinated by this concept of “blending” exposures. I guess I need to take one of your classes!
Great picture Joseph.
Question: Since you were shooting into the sun, why did you use the CPL? Was it for the reduction in light transmission, so you could slow the wave action?
I like the Fotodiox rig, since it seems to do the same thing and is way cheaper than the Lee rig.
Thanks,
Mike
Breathtaking, Joseph!
