Introducing Alex Mody, Newest Member of the Impressions of Nature Blog Team

Hello everybody, my name is Alex Mody. I am an avid nature photographer and college student currently living in Olympia, Washington. When Joe asked me to participate as a blogger here, I was happy to say yes. He has been a great friend and mentor to me, and I am very excited to be a part of the Impressions of Nature blog! I will be periodically sharing photographs, along with tales of their creation, and my thoughts and ideas pertaining to them.

So, I will start as Chris did, by sharing six favorite photographs of mine. Thanks for looking! I would greatly appreciate hearing anything you may have to say, or answering any questions, so feel free to leave a comment.

Frosted Aspens II – I photographed this aspen stand while snowshoeing deep within Utah’s Manti-La-Sal National Forest. The trees are coated with a thin layer of hoar frost, giving them a silvery, almost metallic appearance. When I saw this scene, the contrast between the aspens and the darker conifers behind them immediately caught my eye.

Roan Light – I took this photograph from atop Jane Bald, on massive Roan Mountain, high along the borderlands of North Carolina and Tennessee. I had timed my visit to coincide with the annual Rhododendron and Azalea blossoms, but nature had its own plan, and I was not greeted with any particularly notable blossoms at all.

Barred Owl Stare – I took this photograph of a Barred Owl just moments before it took flight, in pursuit of another owl calling from a few hundred yards away. This image was on display in the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History for the “Youth Photographer of the Year” award in Nature’s Best Photography Magazine’s 2009 Windland Smith Rice Awards. It was a great honor to have my work hanging in such a well-reputed museum, and, not to mention, one that I had visited religiously as a young child.

Into the Abyss – This photo is the result of a convergence of multiple factors: low enough tides that only occur a few times a year, sea currents coming from the proper direction to expose these stone fins, my stubbornness (I waited three days for this shot), and what I feel is the right combination of light and clouds.

New Life – I made this photograph while out photographing on the Oregon side of the Columbia River Gorge. When I came upon this scene, I couldn’t help but notice the way the sword ferns led my eye through Gorton Creek and the radiant foliage behind it.

Red Fox Running in Snow – This photograph is from Algonquin Provincial Park, in Ontario, Canada. Back when I lived on the East coast, I loved to visit our great, white, and snowy neighbors. I headed out with my friend Greg Schneider, in search of northern owls and finches, and we were delighted to come across a pair of Red Foxes that didn’t seem to mind our presence very much. Interestingly, a photo Greg took while standing next to me was on the cover of National Geographic Magazine in March 2011, and mine is slated to appear in the Smithsonian Natural History Museum, as a part of the Windland Smith Rice Awards later this year.
